Excessive speeding is defined as going 30 mph or more over the speed limit or traveling at 80 mph or more, regardless of the limit. Defendants get a criminal record if convicted, and the law imposes a mandatory license suspension, hefty fine and drivers can also face jail time.

A Hawaii Supreme Court ruling late last year called into question the laser guns used to clock drivers’ speed and requires the prosecutor to introduce more evidence verifying the accuracy of the laser guns. A ruling just a month ago requires supporting testimony as or paperwork to authenticate the accuracy of a police cruiser’s speedometer used to gauge the motorist’s speed. This authentication evidence is required in addition to the “speed check card” issued by the company that tests the speedometer’s accuracy.  Call Attorney Jackson if you need assistance with an excessive speeding charge or any traffic related matter.
